History

Korean Thyroid Research Group, the root of Korean Thyroid Association, was founded at March 24th, 1977 and had held annual scientific meetings until 1985. From 1986, Korea Thyroid Research Group merged into Korean Endocrine Society (www.endocrinology.or.kr/eng) and became a Thyroid Subdivision of Korean Endocrine Society. In 1999, Thyroid subdivision of Korean Endocrine Society held the first Thyroid Symposium at Seoul, and then held 6 more subsequent thyroid symposiums in Seoul, Daejeon, Yeosu and Pusan.
Internationally, we attended Congress of Asia Oceania Thyroid Association, International Thyroid Congress, Korea-Japan thyroid conference, and Korea-China-Japan Thyroid Association as a representative group for thyroid specialists of Korea in the name of “Korean Thyroid Society” or “Korean Thyroid Association”. We had hosted 4th Congress of Asia Oceania Thyroid Association (Apr 19 to 21, 1989; Seoul, Korea). We had been the secretariat of Asia Oceania Thyroid Association from 2000 to 2005 (President, Bo Youn Cho; Secretary General, Young Kee Shong).
Patient care and research on thyroid diseases require multi-disciplinary approach, such as endocrinology, endocrine surgery, head and neck surgery, nuclear medicine, pathology, radiology, ophthalmology and preventive medicine. Thus, members from the following eight societies founded Korean Thyroid Association in 2008 and had first official meeting at February 16th, 2008 (First President, Jeong Soo Park; First Chairman of Directors, Jong Soon Kim).
